I love movies, and as an aspiring film maker, I hope to make them one day. Here are my top 10 favorite films of all time. Just to clarify, these are not the best movies I've seen. These are movies that I enjoy the most and, for the most part, inspired me. Another thing to note is that I count trilogies as one film.
So without further ado, let's begin.
10: "Big Fish" (2003)
This is Tim Burton's most underrated film to date, and in my opinion, it's his best. It's a very inspirational (and albeit thought provoking) tale involving a father and son relationship and it has some cool/twisted fantasy elements.
9. "Mr. Nobody" (2009)
This is a very powerful drama about life and choice. It is also a nice blend of romance and mind bending science fiction and it totally makes sense if you pay attention.
8. "Inception" (2010)
This is Christopher Nolan's magnum opus. It's a very neat, smart and intriguing mind bender about dreams and the dangers of living life in a dream.
7. "Pan's Labyrinth" (2006)
This is Guillermo del Toro's magnum opus. It is a powerful drama about Facism, the fear of growing up, and the escapism of imagination. It is also like a fairy tale for adults and has some neat fantasy/horror elements. Also, it relies more on practical effects than CGI.
6. Toy Story Trilogy: "Toy Story" (1995), "Toy Story 2" (1999), and "Toy Story 3" (2010)
I love all three Toy Story movie and I honestly can't decide which one I enjoy the most. Toy Story 1 and 2 were an important part of my childhood and Toy Story 3 took me back to that time. These films will always have a special place in my heart.
5. "The Fall" (2006)
Just like Pan's Labyrinth, The Fall is a drama that it like a dark fairy tale for adults. This film deals with the friendship, the thoughts of suicide, and fantasy escapism. It has beautiful cinematography and stunning visuals, and it's entirely shot in film. It was filmed in a 4 year period and in 18 different locations and I think they did an incredible job.
4. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975)
This movie is absolutely hilarious and smart. It is a very clever spoof/satire of the King Arthur legend as well as the Holy Grail.
3. Lord of the Rings Trilogy: "Fellowship of the Ring" (2001), "The Two Towers" (2002) and "Return of the King" (2003)
These films are epic in every possible way. I have not read the books (except the first one) but the movies captivated me as a child and they really hold up to this day. Basically, they took cinema and the fantasy genre to the next level. They are also some of the movies that got me interested in film. Instead of relying entirely on CGI, they used a combination of CGI and practical effects and captued most of it in film.
2. Star Wars (Original) Trilogy: "Star Wars" (1977) "Empire Strikes Back" (1980), "Return of the Jedi" (1983)
As a child, I thought that the original Star Wars were very exciting and creative and I still do to this day. Just like Lord of the Rings, the original Star Wars films got me interested in film and are a very important part of mine and my older brother's childhood and has inspired me to make my own films. I can watch these films again and again and not get bored. Forget the prequels. The original trilogy is where it's at.
1. "A Christmas Story" (1983)
This is not just my favorite Christmas movie but my favorite movie period. My family and I watch it every Christmas and often reference it from time to time. It's very clever, funny, satirical, memorable and quotable. Just like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Toy Story, this is a very important part of my childhood. Christmas is my favorite holiday and Ralph is a character that I can kinda relate to (though I may relate to Randy more). Those are the reasons that A Christmas Story is my favorite film of all time.
